The U. S. Government sponsored numerous expeditions for the purpose of searching for possible railroad routes across the western U.S. This lithograph, from an engraving by Gustav Sohon, November 1850, was published as part of the twelve-volume set, Reports of Explorations and Surveys, to Ascertain the....Route for a Railroad From the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean.

These steel engravings are from the "Most remarkable places and objects of all countries" included in Meyer's Universum, published by the Bibliographic Institute founded by Joseph Meyers. Shared here are four Missouri scenes which date between 1830 and 1850.
